Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask. I am looking to replace my 2003 explorer Eddie Bauer with something newer. In chatting with my mechanic, he is telling me to avoid the 3.5 and 3.7 v6 motors as the water pump is inside the engine and when they leak it will ruin the motor.
The Duratec 25 is a 2.5 L (155 CID; 2544 cc) 60° V6 and was introduced in 1994. It was developed for the Ford Contour and used in the Ford Mondeo, Ford Cougar, Jaguar X-Type, and others. The Duratec 25 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1995 and 1996, and the SVT version made the list for 1998 and 1999.

I have the 3.0 Duratec in my 04' Mazda6, and I only hear a slight tick coming from the warm engine which I believe is the fuel injectors. Other than that it's a pretty smooth and quiet engine.
